One important clarification first: this is not the same as the interoperable QR shown by bank terminals and digital wallets. That one is issued by your payment provider and can't be manufactured from outside. What's generated here is a code that opens your payment link, which is a valid alternative and works anywhere your provider operates.

In your payment provider, create a payment or money-request link. It can be for a fixed or open amount, depending on what you sell.

If the link is for a fixed amount, the sign should state which product or service it covers, so the customer understands what they're paying for.

Scan it from another phone and go all the way to the payment screen before using it with a real customer. Check that the name shown is your business.
What to show alongside the code
A customer about to pay needs to know three things before scanning: who they're paying, how much, and what for. A bare code on a counter breeds distrust, and rightly so: that is exactly the shape impersonation fraud takes.
So the sign should carry the business name, the amount if fixed, and preferably the logo. When the customer scans and the payment screen shows the same name as the sign, the transaction completes without hesitation. When it shows a different name, the customer stops, and they're right to.
Security: the real risk of a payment QR out on the street
There is a very simple and very widespread fraud that consists of sticking a sticker with a different code over the merchant's legitimate one. The customer pays, the money goes to another account, and the business finds out at closing time. It has happened to car parks, parking meters and market stalls in several countries.
The defences are just as simple. Physically check the code now and then for a sticker on top, especially if it sits unattended in public view. Laminate it or put it under glass so nothing can be stuck over it. And show the business name on the sign, so the customer can compare it with what the payment screen says.
The same rule applies on the customer's side: before confirming a payment, read whose name it's going to. That single step is what separates a normal payment from a diverted one, and it takes two seconds.
